Money - a First Grade Project for Financial Literacy
Financial literacy is a critical 21st century skill. It is one of the points in our Multiple Literacies compass at 21st Century Schools. Additionally, it is directly connected to all the "7 Survival Skills of the 21st Century" as outlined by Tony Wagner of Harvard University which comprise our third compass. See the 3 Compasses here.
You can design and implement a high level, FUN and engaging, interdisciplinary project based upon Money. This project could easily integrate all the points on all the compasses. As an example, you can locate and download a project designed and taught by Anne Shaw when she was teaching first grade. It was done prior to the use of today's technologies in the classroom, but you can easily see many ways to integrate technologies in a meaningful way. We always stress that technologies should support, not drive, the curriculum. Therefore, we discourage simply seeking out apps that allow students to practice low level, basic skills. Those should never drive the curriculum.
