Candy Curriculum
Candy - ?!?!?!? - Oh, yes, Candy is a fantastic topic, rich with avenues to connect language arts, science, social studies, math, economics, and cultural studies . . . social justice issues.
Did you know that slavery still exists and is part of the chocolate industry on the cacao plantations in Africa? Your students, if they are inclined to do so, and most students are passionate about helping others, can design a service learning project in which they take authentic action to create change. They can actually make a difference!
The Serendipity! - Inspired by watching a television program in which they toured some candy factories – Jelly Belly, a candy cane factory, the Hershey’s Factory and the Tootsie Roll Factory – I decided to do some research to find out whether a relevant, rigorous and real world curriculum could be designed based on candy. As usual, when brainstorming any theme, I found a wealth of connections to all the disciplines, to all the multiple literacies, 21st century skills and of course, a way for students to achieve high levels of learning of the standards (whether they are CCSS, other state/national standards or the IB or Cambridge standards.)
My Candy PPT demonstrates that this theme has easy connections to agriculture, biodiversity, nutrition, chemistry, physics, microbiology, engineering, ancient civilizations, cultural studies, the arts, the media, history, government, geography, transportation, government, law, economics, environmental studies, social issues, health and physical fitness, music and the media, service learning and more.
I did not look up all those resources, but did discover that these are significant, meaningful areas directly related to and derived from the theme of Candy.
I found out that the candy industry is bigger- by far - than the steel industry! The resources/books listed at the end of the PPT are truly excellent, and I learned a great deal reading them. The PPT below is merely my initial brainstorm; I have not yet develop a unit, but it can serve to guide you and your students in your exploration.
Can you imagine any student not loving to do such a unit?
This is Serendipity in Curriculum Design!
