The United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps created Educational Outreach programs in order to keep the rich traditions of American Military Field Music alive. Historically informed music gives a unique human insight into the history of the United States. The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and its chamber groups, to include the Historical Trumpets and Flutes, is the only musical organization of its kind, either military or civilian. We have a tremendous opportunity to both educate and simultaneously entertain the public with some of the most unique music in existence. We look forward to working with you to bring these traditions to a wider audience.
One of the biggest thrills for members of the Educational Outreach staff is performing for young children. We have the capability to bring music of Early America right into your classroom! We provide groups as small as one fifer to bring a slice of history right to you. We can play for your class and also talk about the history of the music we play, the uniform we wear, and what it would have been like to serve as a musician in the Continental Army.
Preserving the Sounds of Liberty
Preserving the Sounds of Liberty: a dynamic presentation on the Traditions of Military Field Music provides an opportunity for the Fife and Drum Corps to explain the history of its instruments and the capacity in which they are used today. The performance brings to life historical repertoire dating to the Revolutionary War and also presents modern versions of traditional tunes that have been adapted for the Corps’ modern day mission.
Clinics
The Fife and Drum Corps has performed clinics at high schools, universities, and at some of the most prestigious professional music conferences in the world. We are able to offer a variety of drumline clinics, clinics focusing on historical and contemporary fife and flute performance, historical and modern trumpet and bugle performance, as well as Irish flute and percussion.
Master Classes
The Fife and Drum Corps and Historical Ensembles love to work with students of all levels in a masterclass format. We have participated in masterclasses for trumpet, flute, and percussion studios at myriad universities as well as at fife and drum events. We often add a brief masterclass onto the end of a clinic or a Preserving The Sounds of Liberty presentation. It is a highlight of many of our drumline clinics for students to come up and play with the line. Students can feel free to play modern repertoire on modern instruments as well as performing any historically-based/period music they choose.
