Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was a major event that impacted millions, not only in the Gulf Coast states of America. It's impact was actually global. This event is still a relevant theme for a PBL21 unit.
We recommend brainstorming the possibilities for a PBL21 unit of curriculum by creating a Concept Map and/or a PPT. While we agree that content standards are important and that we must ensure they are learned at high levels, we discourage beginning to plan a curriculum project by first looking at the standards. Do not limit your creativity or the rich possibilities for this project by starting with the standards. They are addressed after the initial brainstorm with the Concept Map and/or PPT.
The following three PPTs were my brainstorm for what could be done with a unit based upon an event - Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The tenth anniversary of this event is approaching in August of 2015. This theme remains a valuable curricular experience. We will be updating for a PBL21 unit based upon the tenth anniversary. Watch this page for new Guiding, or Essential, Questions for 2015 and beyond.
Part I is a slideshow (with music) which introduces this thematic, project-based unit. Part II suggests possible Big Questions (also known as Guiding Questions or Essential Questions) which guide the student learning. Then, Part II goes on to illustrate possibilities for integrating the Multiple Literacies for the 21st Century. In Part III we offer possibilities for how various disciplines can be learned through this project. A beginning list of suggested resources, from vocabulary to children's literature to organizations and songs is offered. You just need to take all these ideas as a jumping off place and build from there.
See this page for additional Hurricane Katrina Resources. Please use the form below to submit your ideas for how to make the Hurricane Katrina unit relevant, rigorous and real world.
